Mouse Button Test
To test every mouse button, point at the test box and press left, right, middle (the wheel) and the two side buttons. Each lights up in the picture and gets its own counter. Side buttons appear as button 4 (back) and 5 (forward). Extra buttons that your mouse software remaps to keys will not show here.
How it works
Point at the grey box and use your mouse there. The page reads your browser’s mouse events and never sends them anywhere.
These tests need JavaScript. The explanations below work without it.
Made for a real mouse. On a phone or tablet, only the click speed test works with touch. In Firefox and Safari a side button may still go back a page; the page tries to stop that.
Mouse button & double-click test
Click, hold and press every button here
Your side button tried to go back or forward. The page stopped it.
Gaps between presses of the same button (red = suspected double click)
How to do it
- Point at the test box.
- Press left, right and middle one at a time.
- Press the back and forward side buttons.
- Check every button lit up and has a count.
Mouse button numbers
| Browser number | Button | Usual default action |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Left (main) | Click, select |
| 1 | Middle (wheel press) | Open link in new tab, autoscroll |
| 2 | Right (secondary) | Context menu |
| 3 | Back (side button 4) | Previous page |
| 4 | Forward (side button 5) | Next page |
Browsers only see the five standard buttons. Gaming mice with more buttons usually send keyboard keys or macros from their own software, so a web page cannot test those directly.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test the middle mouse button?
Press the wheel down in the test box. The middle part of the mouse picture lights up and the middle counter rises. The test box stops autoscroll, so you can press it as often as you like.
Why do my side buttons not show up?
Mouse software may have remapped them to something else, or the browser may not receive them. Check your mouse software. On Mac, some mice need the maker’s software for side buttons to work at all.
Why did my side button go back a page?
Back and forward are the default actions of the side buttons. The page tries to block that inside the test box, but Firefox and Safari can still navigate. If it happens, the button clearly works.
What does hold time show?
Hold time is how long the button stayed down from press to release. It helps spot a button that releases on its own or one that sticks down longer than you actually held it.
How many buttons can a browser detect?
Browsers report five standard buttons: left, middle, right, back and forward. Any extra buttons on gaming mice work through the mouse software, which usually turns them into keyboard keys or macros that a web page cannot tell apart.
