Mouse Double Clicking? Causes and Fixes

A mouse that double clicks when you press once usually has a worn or dirty switch under the button, which bounces and sends two clicks. First confirm it with the double click test, then rule out settings, try cleaning, raise the debounce time if your software allows it, and use the warranty before replacing the switch.

1. Confirm the fault

Run the double click test and click slowly 20 times. Red gaps of a few milliseconds mean the hardware is sending extra clicks. Try the mouse on another computer as well: if the fault follows the mouse, it is the mouse.

2. Check the settings

 • Windows: in Mouse settings, check the double-click speed and turn off ClickLock.
 • Mac: check the double-click speed under Accessibility, Pointer Control.
 • Close or update mouse software and macros, which can repeat clicks.

3. Clean it

Unplug or switch off the mouse. Blow compressed air around the edges of the button while pressing it, and wipe the surface. Some people report that a few dozen firm clicks help for a while, but it rarely lasts.

4. Raise the debounce time

Some gaming mice let you set a debounce time in their software. A slightly higher value tells the mouse to ignore the bounce. It does not repair the switch, but it can make the mouse usable.

5. Use the warranty

Double clicking is a common, known fault. Save the result image from the double click test and contact the maker or the shop while the mouse is under warranty.

6. Replace the switch

Out of warranty, the switch can be replaced. It means opening the mouse, desoldering the old switch and soldering in a new one of the same size. If you are not comfortable with that, a repair shop can do it, or replacing the mouse may cost less.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my mouse double click on its own?

Most often the metal contact inside the button switch has worn or oxidized, so it bounces and sends two clicks. Static, dust and a few settings can cause similar symptoms. The double click test shows whether the hardware is the cause.

Can I fix a double-clicking mouse myself?

Sometimes. Cleaning, a debounce setting in the mouse software or replacing the switch can work. Replacing a switch means opening the mouse and soldering, which voids most warranties, so try the warranty first.

Does compressed air fix double clicking?

It can help when dust is the cause, and it is safe to try. Blow air around the button edges while clicking. If the fault is a worn contact, it will usually return.

What is debounce time?

Debounce time is how long the mouse ignores new presses after a click. Some gaming mice let you raise it in their software, which hides switch bounce. Setting it too high limits how fast you can click.

Should I replace the mouse or the switch?

For a cheap mouse, a replacement is usually simpler. For an expensive mouse out of warranty, a new switch can be worth it if you are comfortable soldering, or a repair shop can do it.
