Mouse DPI Test

To estimate your mouse DPI, put a ruler next to the mouse, hold the left button in the test box and move exactly 10 cm. The page counts how many screen pixels the pointer moved and divides by the distance in inches. Turn off pointer acceleration first, or the number will change with how fast you move.

How it works

Point at the grey box and use your mouse there. The page reads your browser’s mouse events and never sends them anywhere.

These tests need JavaScript. The explanations below work without it.

Made for a real mouse. On a phone or tablet, only the click speed test works with touch. In Firefox and Safari a side button may still go back a page; the page tries to stop that.

DPI test

How to do it

  1. Turn off pointer acceleration.
  2. Put a ruler next to the mouse and enter the distance.
  3. Hold the left button in the box and move exactly that distance.
  4. Let go and read the estimated DPI. Repeat three times.

Why the result may not match the box

DPI (or CPI) is how many counts the sensor sends per inch. The browser sees pointer movement after the operating system has applied its speed setting and any acceleration, so the test measures counts only when the system speed is neutral and acceleration is off.

  • Windows: turn off "Enhance pointer precision" and keep the pointer speed slider in the middle.
  • Mac: pointer acceleration is on by default and changes the result; treat the number as a rough guide.
  • Move slowly and in a straight line, and repeat three times.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my mouse DPI?

The exact value is in the mouse software or the product specifications. This test gives an estimate: move a measured distance and the page divides the pixels moved by the inches. Turn off acceleration for a fair result.

Why does the DPI test give different numbers each time?

Pointer acceleration makes the pointer move further when you move faster, so the same distance gives different results. Small differences in how far you actually moved also matter. Move slowly, in a straight line, and repeat.

Is DPI the same as sensitivity?

Not quite. DPI is set in the mouse. Sensitivity is set in the operating system or a game and multiplies the movement. The pointer speed you feel is the two combined.

What DPI should I use?

There is no single right value. Choose a DPI and system speed that let you reach the whole screen comfortably without losing precision. Many players lower in-game sensitivity rather than DPI.

Does screen scaling affect the result?

Yes. The page multiplies by your device pixel ratio to count real screen pixels, but scaling and high-resolution screens can still shift the estimate. The result shows the pixel ratio it used.
